The NZAP Edge Shooting Machine

Designed by Geoff Hill

The NZAP Edge Shooting Machine In order to fully understand the new NZAP Edge Shooting Machine it helps to know its designer and builder, Geoff Hill. His mates describe him in an interesting variety of ways, but they all use the same adjectives: meticulous, cranky, brilliant, insanely precise, amazingly energetic, perfectionist, and driven are among the most common. And they use phrases such as, "the best bloody engineer I ever worked with," "one of the top bowhunters in New Zealand," "knows more about archery than anyone alive," and (our personal favourite) "the most infuriatingly persnickety bastard that I ever met." To say that Geoff is a perfectionist is a bit of an understatement and the results of this perfectionism show loud and clear in his masterpiece: The NZAP Edge Archery Shooting Machine.

When you first see Geoff's new shooting machine, there is a natural tendency to compare it to the famous Hooter Shooter marketed by Spott Hogg. Now, besides sporting a catchy name, the Hooter Shooter is a fine machine. It is an extremely lightweight and highly portable version of similar bow-shooting machines that have been around since the 60s. (A Hooter Shooter is also a potent drink using cranberry juice, Vodka, and Chamboird, but that's for a different web site)The problem is that, in order to achieve this light weight and portability the Hootershooter necessarily relies on a lot of plastic and tubular-aluminium parts. And, of course, there is the inherent contradiction of a test platform, which must be absolutely rigid to function well, and the necessity of being able to fold the thing away into a golf-bag sized package that an average person can tote around without working up a sweat. The NZAP Edge Shooting Machine

The NZAP Edge Shooting Machine is also a copy of those machines that have been around for 50 years, but it is a highly refined and brilliantly engineered one. And it isn't a lightweight! While a husky lad or lass wouldn't have any trouble loading it in the back of the ute to take to the range or club, it does weigh nearly 40 kilos, so calling it portable would be a bit of a stretch. It also has more built-in adjustability and precision than any similar machine I have ever inspected. And, amazingly, it is also easier to use than any similar machine on the market today, even with the Hoyt bridged risers and Muzzy drop-away rests that just don't work on many machines.
