Periodic Maintenance for Your Compound BowModern compound bows require very little maintenance if they are cared for and stored properly. You should religiously wax your string and cables after every hundred shots or so, of course, and a drop or two of Teflon lube on the cam and wheel axles every few months won't do a bit of harm either. Make sure you wipe away any surface oil after applying lube as any residue will attract grit and dust. You could easily end up doing more harm than good. If you drop your bow in the dirt and get grit on the cams or wheels, you should immediately clean away all the foreign material you can with compressed air at your local petrol station. Make sure the limb pockets, sight, and arrow rest are also free of abrasive grit and grime. Then as soon as practical, take the bow to your closest archery pro shop (or send it to NZAP) for servicing. If you feel comfortable disassembling your bow yourself, and you have the proper bow press and other tools, proceed with caution as it is very easy to do serious damage and void the warranty if you get it wrong. Disassemble the bow, removing the cams, axles, limbs and any accessories and give all these parts a thorough cleaning with CRC or WD-40. Reassemble using Teflon oil on the axles and a small dab of white lithium grease (available in nearly all bicycle shops) on the limb pockets. |
