Multi-Tool Maintenance

The invention of the Multi Tool has become the stuff of legend. The story goes that Tim Leatherman conceived the idea for the first Leatherman Multi-Tool while on a budget tour of Europe in the mid 70s with his new wife. Staying in decidedly down-scale and bottom-drawer guest houses and traveling in an old car meant the there were many occasions for emergency repairs, and Leatherman became hopelessly frustrated by the inadequacies of his boy-scout knife. His ten-year campaign to improve the venerable boy-scout utility knife ultimately led to the first Leatherman Multi-Tool.

Is this the true story? Who knows. What we do know is that the Leatherman Multi-Tools set the standard for an amazing variety of these now indispensable devices that has grown into the hundreds of different models. Regardless of the model you own, here are a few tips for keeping your multi-tool in top condition.

Depending on what your multi-tool has been exposed to, there are several cleaning methods to consider. If your multi-tool has been exposed to salt water or marine environments, it should be thoroughly rinsed in fresh water, dried, and lubricated with a water-displacing product. If debris or sticky substances have accumulated between the blades, your multi-tool may also be cleaned in a mild solution of detergent and water. To remove tar and similar substances, clean your multi-tool with turpentine or other mineral spirits. Do not use chlorine products. After cleaning, dry your multi-tool and apply a light machine oil or a water-displacing product (WD-40) to force out moisture trapped in the joints. This also helps protect the tool from further corrosion and sticking.

Following these few common-sense maintenance procedures will insure that your multi-tool will last a lifetime.
