Bow Slings and Finger Slings

One of the most common and troublesome errors in shooting accurately on any division of archery is perfect form. And one of the most common errors in form is torquing the bow on release. New archers want to get the bow out of the way to see where the arrow is going, want to push the arrow a bit to help it on its way, or strangle the grip in fear of dropping their precious new bow. All of these things lead to torque, which causes erratic arrow flight and frustration on the part of the shooter who can't figure out what is wrong. Even experienced shooters fall victim to the torque monster. There is no easy solution and the best cure is plenty of practice and some expert coaching. You can't buy your way out of a form problem, however a good sling used properly can often help. The function of a sling is to remove the anxiety about dropping the bow on release. Once you achieve that, the rest is up to you and your coach.

QUICK TIP

Just about any small leather or fabric strap with a buckle or hook-and-loop can be pressed into service as a functional bow sling. Simply trim the strap to length, leaving a little extra for adjustment, and fasten it to the back of your bow under the grip. The stabiliser bushing is the obvious place to fasten it, but if it the bushing is not in exactly the right position or if you don't have a stabiliser bushing, good quality double-stick-tape does a champion job. The thick pads sold in Miter 10 for hanging pictures on the wall do a particularly good job and the bond will last for years.
