Scent Killer by Wildlife Research

Scent Killer products are made and marketed by the Wildlife Research Centre in Ramsey Minnesota, USA, one of the best whitetail bowhunting areas in the world, so the have ample opportunities to test and refine their products. helps hunters stay undetected. The anti-bacterial action of all Scent Killer products are formulated to destroy 99 percent of the residual human scent normally emitted as a gas by bacteria on human skin, hair and in exhaled breath regardless of personal hygiene habits. The formulas are all scent neutral (ie, they have no odour or small) and they kill the bacteria that causes human scent on contact. Scent Killer formulations are extensively tested in the Wildlife Research Centre lab to insure that odour elimination is at least 99 percent of normal residual scent levels. The tiny one percent remaining is not detectable by any game animals, even those with highly refined olfactory glands such as feral pigs and deer.

Scent Killer products are designed to last for an all-day hunt, subject to variations in temperature, humidity and the degree of activity, and are very easy to use. the Scent Killer Clothing Wash is a very good detergent that can be used regularly after every hunt to keep all your bowhunting clothing (especially your socks and underdaks) free of human odours. Use for the Scent Killer bath soap before a hunt removes most (99%) of the scent-causing bacteria from the skin. The Scent Killer Spray is best used by spraying your boots and external camo gear (don't forget your hat or cap) just before you enter the bush. Of all the Scent Killer products, the spray is the most important as it not only eliminates odours emitted by your clothing but spraying it on boots and trousers eliminates your scent trail as well.

Naturally, you need to be realistic when using any products, such as these Scent Killers, that promise to make bowhunting easier. While the proper use of these products can help a lot, they aren't a substitute for good hunting practices and they surely won't replace the refined hunting skills necessary for success in bowhunting. However, used properly with proven bowhunting practices, Scent Killers are another arrow in the quiver of bowhunting skills that can make the difference between a good bowhunter and a really great bowhunter.

Atsko U-V Killer

Used together Atsko U-V Killer and Atsko Sport-Wash wash away and neutralise all the ultra-violet detergent brighteners contained in normal household laundry detergent. these brighteners act as an early warning system for game animals whose eyes are sensitive to the ultra-violet spectrum. By washing these brighteners out of your hunting clothing you can make your outer garments virtually invisible to the ultra-sharp eyesight of deer and other large game animals. Nearly all game animals like all species of deer have eyesight that is very sensitive to the short blue 438nm wavelengths of the ultra-violet spectrum that humans can not see without the aid of an external UV lamp. Atsko U-V-Killer absorbs ultra-violet light and washes away the glare that fabric dyes and detergents with contain U-V brighteners put into the fabric.

To use Atsko UV Killer first wash new or soiled garments in your regular washing machine using Sport-Wash. You can do this right after every use so that your hunting clothes are ready to go when you are. Then spray all your outer garments liberally with the U-V-Killer spray and hang to dry (don't use an electric dryer). There is enough UV Killer in an 18-Ounce (532ml) spray bottle to treat two complete sets of camo hunting garments. Once you give your bowhunting kit a complete UV Killer treatment, you can rewash everything in the Sport Wash without removing the spray. However, if your clothing is washed in regular detergent, you should redo the treatment as the UV killer will have been washed away and replaced by the brighteners.

Atsko Waterproofing Products

Atsko is one of the original green companies. They began business in the depths of the depression (in 1933 to be exact) before it was cool to be environmentally concerned. Their first product was Sno-Seal, which is a leather treatment and waterproofing compound that, unlike most similar products, doesn't use any animal fats to waterproof leather. Instead, Sno-Seal uses beeswax, which doesn't clog the pores of the leather like animal fats do Since then, Atsko has expanded and added other products to its lineup, including the UV Killer listed above, but they have always strived to produce the best possible products at the highest quality consistent with sound environmental practices. Atsko waterproofing products listed here typically work better than more familiar brands of waterproofing materials and give better results for a better price.

Atsko Permanent Water-Guard contains no harsh solvents and is actually a water-based fluorocarbon polymer that is highly resistant to stains and totally water repellant. Water_Guard dries odor free and without U-V brighteners, which makes it particularly interesting to bowhunters in New Zealand and Australia. It is also guaranteed to remain effective for at least washings in Atsko Sport-Wash listed above, a claim no other similar waterproofing product can make. In fact Water-Guard out performs expensive factory-applied famous-name waterproofing. The 17-ounce (500ml) size trigger spray bottle of Water-Guard is designed to treat naturally absorbent materials such as cotton, wool, duck and goose down, canvas, suede leather, and blends of cotton and synthetic fibers.

Atsko Silicone Water-Guard comes in a 10.5-ounce (310ml) spray can, which uses environmentally-safe CO2 instead of fluoride propellants and contains no chlorinated solvents. Silicone Water-Guard is designed for outer wear, shoes and boots, tents, sleeping bags, and suede leather. It is easy to apply and provides maximum water repellency in a single treatment. It also rejuvenates factory-applied waterproofing treatments, and because it doesn't seal the fabric, it allows materials to breathe so perspiration can evaporate and not accumulate on inner garments.

Atsko's original Sno-Seal Beeswax Waterproofing is formulated specifically to protect leather from rain, sun, snow, and salt. Other leather-waterproofing compounds contain greases, oil, and animal fats that are unstable and actually spread through the thickness of the leather where they fill all the natural microscopic cavities that provide leather with its unique ability to breathe and wick away perspiration while providing temperature controlling insulation. The beeswax in Sno-Seal dries to form a solid-wax shield that remains on the surface without migrating into the leather. This allows the natural pores in the leather to breathe normally and continue to function. Animal products can also rot leather while Sno-Seal helps to preserve it.

Primos Wind Checker
Primos Wind Checker

Primos Wind Checker

Even the best of scent removers, like the Scent Killer listed above, don't remove 100 percent of body odours or other smells emitting from clothing or hunting gear so savvy bowhunters understand that even with every precaution, staying downwind of a targeted game animal is still the most important part of a successful hunt. If your quarry catches your scent you're busted and your hunt is finished with that particular animal.

Wind Checker is dead simple to use. Simply pop the flip-top up and squeeze a tiny cloud of scent-free powder into the air. No matter how still the air seems to be, it is always moving, so by observing the direction of drift of the puff of Wind-Checker powder you can see which way the air currents are carrying your scent and plan your stalk accordingly.

Maintain Your Bowhunting Boots

Considering what a good pair of tramping boots costs these days, you would think that every bowhunter would take as good care of their boots as they do of their most expensive arrows and broadheads. But the sad truth is that many a pair of expensive tramping boots spends most of its time caked with mud in the back of the ute. Boots that aren't maintained aren't comfortable and uncomfortable boots can drain vital energy on a long tramp into a bowhunting block. Here are a few common-sense rules for keeping your bowhunting boots in top condition.

Always break in a new pair of boots by wearing them to work or around the house for a few weeks before heading off on a long bow hunt. Waterproof your boots while they are still new as the waterproofing will soften the leather and help with the breaking-in process. Occasionally a new pair of boots won't break in and aren't comfortable even after wearing them regularly for weeks. Don't persist with these but return them to the store where you bought them to see if they can be adjusted. If they can't, flog them off on Trade Me and start over.

Always lace your boots when you wear them. Walking around in a pair of unlaced boots may look cool and casual but it can greatly increase wear on the interior linings of the boots and will eventually cause the boots to loose their shape, which have a negative effect on comfort.

Boot worn while bowhunting in New Zealand spend a lot of time in river crossings so they are wet most of the time. Whenever possible, wet boots should be air dried slowly so the leather doesn't loose essential oils and crack. It isn't good practice to dry boots by a fire or in an oven but the gentle application of the heat from a hair dryer can speed the drying process without doing undue damage to the leather. Boots that have a chalky or parched appearance when thoroughly dry are ready for new application of leather treatment and waterproofing. Always clean and dry your boots before storing them away for any length of time. Residual mud can be particularly damaging as it sucks oils out of the leather as it dries and can cause the leather to crack. Wash mud off your boots with plenty of clean water before the mud has a chance to dry. Clean mud from seams and from around the soles with an old toothbrush.

Lastly, boots are made to be worn so when you aren't able to get out hunting for a month or so, put your boots on for a few hours every few weeks while you work around the house or walk to the store and back. Regular use and proper maintenance will keep your boots in top condition and ready to go hunting the next time you are.
