Of all the technological developments of the past few years that are designed to give bowhunters an advantage over their quarry, nothing has had quite as much impact as the portable game camera (also called a stealth camera or a trail camera). Properly positioned, one of these wondrous devices can impart a world of information to the diligent hunter. The amount of game in a area (or equally as important, the absence of game in an area) the times and direction of movement, feeding times, the size of trophies, heard numbers, species available, other hunters in the area, and a ton of other important data can be derived from a single strategically placed game camera. There are dozens of trail cameras on the market, so after some gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair, the NZAP staff has nominated the Primos Truth Cam 46 as one of the most appropriate for the conditions found in New Zealand and Australia.
One cool thing about the Truth Cam 46 is its flexibility. You can easily adjust the the number of LED's that come into play when the camera is triggered, up to the maximum of fourt-six. This lets you use just a few LEDs during the day or for short-range shots, which can greatly extend the life of the batteries, or use them all for extended range (up to 50 feet) at night or in the deep bush where the sunlight never shines. The back-lit LED screen has large very legible and easy-to-follow menu settings with all setting pre set at the optimum for most bowhunting situations. In most cases, you need only hang your camera in an appropriate location (see NZAP Quicktip), point it in the right direction, and let the factory settings do the rest.
The Truth Cam 46 will capture either photos or video, your choice, with important data such as the date, time, ambient temperature, and even the phase of the moon (really) all of which add up to the information you need to make your most important bowhunting decisions. Image resolution is 5.0 megapixels during daylight hours and 3.1 megapixels after dark. Video resolution is 640x480 pixels at 340 frames-per-second for 1 minute at a go. Trigger speed of the Truth Cam 46 is a very adequate 1.5 second when in the default sleep mode and only 0.3 second when it is active. The extra-slim, low-profile design comes with a baked-on Matrix camo finish, which is important for security. The case is 8.75 inches (222mm) tall, 6.63 inches (168mm) wide, and 2.9 inches (73mm) deep. A strap for hanging is included but you will have to supply a SD card (sold in any camera store) and four D-Cell batteries. Naturally, the Truth Cam 46 comes with the Primos One-Year Limited Warranty.
