Bear Grylls is a well-known British adventurer, writer and TV host who specialises in outdoor survival. He is the youngest climber on record to conquer Mount Everest, he has crossed the Atlantic Ocean in an unpowered open inflatable boat, he was nearly killed in a parachuting mishap in Zambia, and he has been a survival instructor and Patrol Medic in the British SASS. Grylls has done a lot of cool stuff in the outdoors so when he teamed up with Gerber to develop the ultimate survival knife, the world was watching.
The result of the Gerber/Grylls collaboration is the Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival Knife manufactured and marketed by the Gerber Legendary Blades Company in Tigard, Oregon USA, (now owned by the famous knife maker, Fiskers, of Finland), and it is a dandy. The compact design weighs a comfortable 11 ounces ( 317 g ) and with its sturdy 4.8-inch (12.2 cm) high-carbon stainless-steel blade, it is a fine choice for a utility knife (one of the prime considerations for a bowhunter who is tramping for several hours into a remote block) that can handle all the routine jobs that an edged tool is called on to perform on the trail or in camp. Plus the Grylls knife is designed with a sensible drop-point blade that makes it an efficient skinning knife as well.
The Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival Knife features a half serrated, high-carbon blade, a no-slip rubberised grip, a stainless hammer built into the pommel, and a silly little whistle that is probably useless but doesn't do any harm. There is also a very effective fire steel that fits onto the sheath, and he sheath is made of lightweight military-grade nylon. It also incorporates a diamond sharpener and a set if survival instructions should you need it.
