When you purchase archery equipment for your son or daughter (or anyone just getting started in archery) it is importand to get quality equipment that is approptriate to the age group of the user as nothing is as frustrating than trying to do well with inadequate bows and arrows.
If your son or daughter is not fitted with the proper bow, it simply won't be fun to shoot, and you can be assured that if it isn't fun to shoot, he or she won't shoot it. Interest will quickly flag and the bow will end up in the closet waiting for your next yard sale. Picking just the right bow for your child can be tricky as it is hard to know what works without trying it first. Therefore all our bows are available on trial. If you buy any bow that isn't just right for you send it back in it's original condition within a week of receipt. We will refund your money or send you a different model (your choice) of bow and all that it will cost you is the postage.
The traditional youth bows and archery starter kits for kids listed here are great fun to shoot but they aren't toys (toy bows are in our Toy Bows and Archery Toys section
and, when children are using them, adult supervision is recommended.
Martin XR Recurve Bow for Kids
The Martin XR Recurve Bow was created for the young archer who deserves the best, and represents the very newest design in traditional youth bows. The Martin XR Recurve bow features integrated black composite riser with matching composite limbs and a parallel Dacron string.
Draw weight is a manageable 15 lbs., which is usually just right for young archers in the 8 to 12 age group.

Kid's Basic Longbows
from Martin Archery
These moulded black fibreglass bows from Martin Archery are great first bow for the youngsters. We call them longbows but more correctly they would be called semi-recurves. They work with the left or right hand and they are practically indestructible.
NZAP now have Martin Kid's Basic Longbows in three sizes: a 40-Inch model with about 9 pounds draw, a 50-inch model with 20 to 25 pounds draw, and a 60-inch model with 25 to 30 pounds draw.
As a vary general guideline, the 40-inch version is best for children under 8 years old. The 50-inch bow is suitable for most children from 9 to 12 years old and up. And the 60-inch bow is suitable from about 13 up to adults.
These long bows are not toys by any means and are serious bows capable of very good accuracy with the correct arrow. Buy the bow alone or get the archery starter set shown below, shich contains the bow and everything else you need to start an archery career.

Monhegan 48" Recurve Takedown Bow
With a laminated wood riser and laminated limbs, this is a light take-down bow suitable for any small person wanting a quality recurve with a light draw weight.
This isn't a kid's bow by any means but it is the perfect next bow for your serious young adult archer who needs a more sophisticated bow than the solid fibreglass bows above, and is ready for their first adult bow. A fine target bow for the beginner up to the age of about 12.
