Horse Bows and Horseback Archery

Horseback Archery, Bowhunting Equipment, Horse Bows                 The history of horseback archery stretches back to the very beginnings of civilization, and was employed as formidable and devastatingly effective method of warfare by many early nations, particularly in Asia and the Mid East. The Scythians are thought to be the first to develop an equestrian martial art, but they were followed by the Koreans, the Mongols, the Huns, the Turks and the Magyars. And the horse bow has been identified as one of the most important of all the historical weapons that have had a profound effect on the political and social makeup of the world we live in today. One interesting bit of archery folklore has the ancient Greeks inventing the mythical half-man, half-horse centaurs after their first exposure to horse archers.

Today there is a tremendous resurgence of interest in all forms of historical archery; Medieval Archery as practiced by the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) Japanese Kyudo and, of course, horseback archery. But you don't have to ride a horse to enjoy shooting a horse bow. They are great fun all by themselves, and with a little practice and the right arrows, they are capable of great accuracy.

NZAP carry a few of the more popular horse bows in stock, and we have formed an alliance with Horseback Archery NZ, the local agents for Lajos Kassai of Hungary. Kassai is a world class archer is his own right and is the world's leading proponent of Horseback Archery. The bloke on the horse in the photo at right is Robert Schreiner of Horseback Archery NZ.

Horse Bow Arrows

Arrows for Horseback Archery

These arrows are built by NZAP to the specifications given to us by Horseback Archery New Zealand specifically for shooting from horse bows. We use full-length (32 Inch, 81.25cm) Easton Gamegetter shafts, 4-inch shield-cut feathers and silk-thread binding on the leading edge of the fletching to protect the shooters bow hand. Only one colour feather is used because horseback archers must shoot quickly and don't have time for the luxury of selecting a cock feather. Nor is shaft spine as important as it is in other archery disciplines so the two size of Gamegetters (400, and 500) offered here should suit most horseback archer's needs very nicely.

Naturally, NZAP can make your horse-bow arrows any way you want them form any shaft we have in stock, so if you want something a little different that what you see here, get in touch and we can discuss it.

NZAP Quick Tip QUICK TIP

Refletch Your Arrows without a Fletching Jig

Inspired by a question from Robert

Arrows with feather fletching are fairly easy to refletch without a jig as you can lace the feathers onto the arrow shaft with sewing thread until the glue dries. But vanes are a bit more of a problem. Here is a really cool old trick given to me by Howard Hill himself (or maybe was it Robin Hood? It was a few years ago.).

  1. Take an old phone book (or any large paperback you don't care too much about) and place it the width of your shaft away from the edge of a table. The spine goes toward the middle of the table so the edge of the book with the closed pages goes along the edge of the table.

  2. Mark the pages of the book 1/2 the width of the shaft up from the table top right where the shaft touches the book when it is laid on the table and held against the stack of pages.

  3. Sandwich your fletch between the pages of the book at the mark with the base of the vane exposed.

  4. Hold the shaft, resting on the table top, against the fletch and check to see that you have contact along the full length of the vane.

  5. Now apply glue (Fletch Tite Platinum is good or use Bohning Instant Gel if you are in a hurry) to the base of the vane.

  6. Return the shaft to the tabletop so that it rests against the vane in just the right spot.
When the glue dries you are back in business. Of course this works best with straight fletches but you can get some helical by elevating the shaft slightly. The shaft must be on the very edge of the table so the other fletches will clear.

Give it a go and let us know how it works. And if it doesn't work all that well, we have a super fletching jig from AAE (the Fletch III Fletching Jig) for only $49.00. (Actually it must have been Howard Hill as the Sherwood Forest telephone book would have been way too thin.)
