Flat knocks do not provide this string-to-bolt security so there is nothing to guarantee that the string is on the same position on the nock from shot to shot. It a worse-case scenario, a the string can actually slip off of a flat knock causing a catastrophic dry fire.

We don't sell the inexpensive Chinese-made crossbows that you see in the fishing and hunting stores and on Trade Me but we do stock these light-weight 18-inch bolts from Barnett for them. Most of these lightweight bows will give acceptable accuracy if the correct bolt is used with them, but in many cases the bolts that are included with the bows are hopeless.
The Barnett 18" Crossbow Bolts are built specifically for light crossbows up to 150 pounds, such as the Buffalo River brand, and will perform very well with these crossbows. The Barnett bolts are 18-inches long, come with 125 grain bullet points, built on wrapped carbon-fibre shafts, are fletched with 3-inch plastic vanes, and weigh a bit over 400 grains with the point.
Barnett bolts are not recommended for the Horton or the Parker crossbows we sell, and it is not recommended that you shoot them with a lighter weight point, as either of these could damage your bow. Their use will also void your Parker or Horton warranty. Sold in packets of five bolts only.
Any discussion of which is the proper term to use when referring to the projectiles shot from crossbows can get rather heated. They are often called bolts, sometimes called quarrels, and with the crossbow industry trying to identify more with archery, they are now frequently called arrows, especially by crossbow manufacturers. The most common term is still "bolt" and there are many crossbow traditionalists who insist that "bolt" is the only term to use. However the dictionary doesn't agree.
The definition of "bolt" is straight forward enough: " A short, heavy arrow with a thick head, used especially with a crossbow."
Likewise, the definition of "arrow" is crystal clear: "A missile having a straight thin shaft with a pointed head at one end and often flight-stabilizing vanes at the other, meant to be shot from a bow or crossbow."
The definition of "quarrel" however derives from the Late Latin word for square (quadrus) and is a bit more specific: "A square-headed bolt or arrow, formerly used with a crossbow."
There you have it. You can call them anything you like. The important thing is to enjoy shooting your crossbow and not worry too much about what the various bits are called.
