For Serious Crossbow Hunters Only

The engineers and designers at Beman applied the latest carbon-fibre technology to develop this state-of-the art bolt capable of standing up to the demanding performance of today's high-performance crossbows. The new ICS Lightning Bolt combines all the rugged durability needed for high-speed accuracy of carbon fibre with the vibration absorbing ViBrake inserts. The Beman ICS Lightning Bolt raises the bar and sets a new standard of performance for serious crossbow hunters around the world.

The Beman ICS Lightning Bolt is the most technologically advanced crossbow bolt ever built. Bowhunters who hunt with crossbows have very high standards for accuracy, precision, and quietness. Hunting in New Zealand and Australia can be physically demanding on hunters and equipment and anything short of the best isn't good enough if there is going to be meat in the chilly bin at the end of the day. The ICS Lightning Bolt incorporates the same ViBrake vibration-dampening insert that Beman developed for their conventional. You can't see them because they are inside the shafts but you can feel the difference ViBrake Inserts make every time you pull the trigger. Vibrake inserts are standard with every new ICS Lightning Bolt assembled by NZAP

Beman has been the industry leader in carbon technology applied to crossbow bolts since they invented carbon arrows. With the new carbon Lightning Bolt the Vibrake insert dampens vibration, absorbs noise and adds weight to the business end of the bolt, which further reduces noise and greatly improves the flight characteristics of the bolt.

Beman ICS Lightning Bolt shafts are built using Easton Archery's (Beman is a subsidiary of the biggest arrow manufacturer in the world) high-strength C2 Carbon technology that has been so successful in many of their arrows over the years. The weight tolerance is plus of minus two grains and the outside diameter of the shaft is 11/32 inches making the ICS bowhunter appropriate for the majority of today's high-tech crossbows.

All ICS Lightning Bolts assembled by NZAP come ready to shoot fletched with four-inch Elite Plastifletch vanes and with a 125-grain RPS bullet point and a nock installed. If you prefer another point weight or would like different fletching, let us know about it in the remarks section of the order form. Standard lengths are 20 and 22 inches but we are happy to trim them to shorter lengths if you prefer. If in doubt on the correct size bolt to use on your bow check you owner's manual or ring us on the free phone.

Moon Nocks or Flat Nocks, Which Is Best for You?

The controversy on the crossbow chat sites rages between those who favour moon nocks (often called halfmoon nocks) over those who favour flat nocks on the tail end of their bolts. It shouldn't be that big of a deal because the answer is really pretty easy. Your first choice of a nock should be the one your manufacturer recommends, it's as simple as that. To go contrary to the recommendations of the folks who built your crossbow would be silly, it could void the warranty if something breaks and it could effect accuracy and safety as well.

Ten Point and Excalibur both recommend flat nocks on bolts used in their products while Parker and Horton both recommend moon nocks. PSE allows you to use either one (except on the TAC Crossbow Series, which use special bolts). These recommendations are not arbitrary but reflect the design characteristics different manufacturers build into their bows.

Both types of nock have their idiosyncrasies. Moon nocks have no slot for the string so in some bows the string can slip off the flat back of the nock effecting a dry fire when the string slides under or over the bolt. The advantage to flat nocks is that in the excitement of the hunt, you don't have to worry about orienting your bolt in the crossbow barrel correctly. The cock fletch can point down right or left and it won't matter. flat nocks are also a bit stronger than moon nocks, which can break if the bow is shot while the bolt isn't pushed all the way back against the string. Moon nocks, on the other hand, must be carefully placed in the barrel channel with the cock fletch down inside the channel. If the cock fletch is not in the channel the slot in the nock will not be orientated with the string and the bow will almost surely dry fire. The big plus of the moon nocks is that the slot centres the string on the bolt giving better shot-to-shot consistency.

If you are shooting an older crossbow or one where he manufacturer does not specify which nock to use, your best bet is to try a few bolts with each. Most bolts today have press-fit nocks so they are very easy to change. Try a few shots with each and you might find that one type will out perform the other, in which case, that is the one to use.
