Making your own arrows for both bowhunting and target archery can be very rewarding. NZAP carry a complete selection of Gateway feathers in both the shield and parabolic profiles. These are real feathers from real birds. (Turkeys actually) Price varies by length.
The most popular of all the feathers we have in stock are right-wing shield-cut in four and five inch but we also stock a good selection of parabolic colours as well. We get a limited number of calls for left-wing feathers, so our selection of these is not as extensive. As it is impossible to keep all shapes, sizes, and colours in stock at all times, so we are out of specific colours from time to time. We will match your request as closely as possible. All feathers are sold by the dozen.
Gateway have applied space-age technology to feather fletching and come up with the Rayzr, a tiny feather that does a big job. They tweaked the shield-cut shape by lowering the profile and increasing the angle between the quill and the high point in the feather's profile. Then by shortening the feather and cutting it from a specific location from a full length feather they came up with a modern version of an age-old technology, just for today's bowhunters.
Extensive field testing of the new Rayzr returned rave reviews and unanimous praise for the Rayzr's quiet flight and ability to control even the largest fixed blade broadheads from the fastest compound hunting bows on the market.
There are a lot of distinct advantages in using real feathers instead of plastic vanes on you arrows. Feathers offer greater arrow control and guidance than do vanes of the same surface area. Feathers easier to tune than vanes and make precision tuning less important. Arrows fletched with feathers will fly faster and at lower trajectories that vanes. Feathers are more forgiving that vanes and will increase the usable spine range of arrows and will not be deflected a by brush or grass as vanes. Plus (and this is a biggie) feathers weigh only half as much as most popular vanes so it is easier to achieve your proper FOC measurement.
Colour, of course, has no effect whatsoever on arrow flight, but just the right combination of hues on the tail end of your arrow can have a dramatic effect their appearance. The feathers listed here are the plain died variety. The most colourful and the least expensive, they are by far the most popular feathers we offer.
These are full length feathers that have been split and the flange prepared for gluing to your shafts. Average length is about 10" but this varies. Use these feathers to make flu-flus and to cut or burn your own fletching for your target and bowhunting arrows. As with the cut feathers above, we carry a greater selection of colours in right wing than in left wing, but it is a good idea to give us an alternate colour in either case.
If you have a feather chopper and are cutting your own feathers you can often get two 5 inch cuts out of each full-length feather (about 50% of the time) but we can't guarantee this because we have to ship to you what they ship to us.
Full-length barred feathers have been dyed with stripes that resemble the natural pattern found on the wing feathers of wild turkeys. they are a great fevourite with traditionalists and re enactors as they approximate the look of feather fletching from antiquity. The are a bit dear, so for an authentic antique look on a budget, use a barred feather for the cock fletch and two solid-coloured feathers for the hen fletch. We only have barred feathers in full length so you will need th trim them to shape by hand or with a chopper.
Because of the cost, we only keep a full inventory in the right-wing feathers, although we usually have a few colours available in left wing. If you must have left wing, give us a ring and we will tell you what is available.

If you are confused about ordering feathers and don't know if you should get right wing or left wing, shield or parabolic, solid colours or barred, just remember that your choice will have very little effect on the performance of your arrows. They will all shoot the same. The important thing is to use the same wing on all of your arrows (i.e., don't mix right wing and left wing feathers in a set of arrows) and (as with plastic vanes) always use the smallest fletch that will do the job. If you want a cool look that is a bit different, it is perfectly OK to use parabolic for the hen fletches and a shield cut for the cock fletch.
If you have some arrows fletched with feathers and don't know if they are right wing or left wing, sight down the feather from the nock end of your arrow. You will notice that one side of the feather has a pronounced lip on the quill or base. If the lip is on the left side of the feather you have a right wing feather. If it is on right side you have a left wing feather.
