Archery Tips and Tricks from NZAP QUICK TIPS

Choosing the Right Fletch for Your Arrows

Many NZAP customers ask us if vanes are better than feathers and vice versa. Unless you are shooting a traditional bow off the shelf (i.e. without a separate arrow rest) it is strictly a matter of preference. Many compound bow and target archers prefer vanes citing greater stability, less air resistance and economy. Many traditional archers prefer feathers citing greater flexibility, lighter weight, and because they're, well, traditional. If you shoot a traditional bow off the shelf, there is an advantage to feathers as vanes can (and will) deflect the arrow.

The size of the fletching is another important consideration, of course. Generally, if you are unsure of the size to use, we recommend that aluminium hunting arrows of size 2117 and above be fletched with three 5" vanes or feathers regardless of the weight of the broadhead. Smaller sizes aluminium arrows and nearly all carbon arrows will fly well with 4" fletching or with 2-inch Bohning Blazer Vanes. Heavier broadheads will sometimes need larger fletching regardless of the arrow shaft used.

Target archers prefer smaller vanes (3 inches or usually smaller) for aerodynamic qualities, better balance and down-range stability. Because target arrows are lighter than hunting and field arrows and you don't have to worry about stabilising heavy points there is no need for large fletching.

These suggestions are only intended to help get the beginning archer started as selecting just the right fletch and shaft combination requires a bit of testing and experimentation. As you become more experienced, you will gradually find that one particular combination works best for you, and that, of course, is the one to stick with.
