Chest protectors aren't mandatory, of course, but if your bowstring is catching on your clothing and you aren't wearing one, it will make you alter your shooting form to stop the string from catching, and hours of concentrated practice at the target butts can be wasted. By wearing a well-fitting chest protector, you remove that concern and free your mind to concentrate on holding steady and back tension. In fact, one of the best ways to develop great target form is to wear a chest protector and stop worrying about the bowstring catching on your clothing. Some top coaches go so far as to say if you don't need a chest protector, your form isn't just right.
