When used properly, the AMS Safety Slide will ensure that your fish line will not tie itself to the bowstring, which is the cause of deadly arrow snap-back. Here's how it works: The slide is installed over the arrow shaft then the line is tied to the slide. When the bow is drawn, the slide and line stay in front of the bow and arrow rest where the line cant tangle in the rest or cables. When released, the line immediately slides to the shock pad and stop screw at the nock end of your arrow.
Another benefit of using the AMS slide is that it also ensures near perfect arrow flight. The line trailing behind a fishing arrow acts just like fletching so it is important to have the line at the nock end of the arrow where stabilisation is most effective. The slide will also restrict penetration and help prevent your arrow from exiting the far side of the fish.
AMS Safety Slides are now made from new, lighter and extremely tough industrial plastic and have a new blue colour. They are 30 percent lighter than the old ones and they last longer because of the lightened impact on the stop block. The AMS Safety Slide has proven itself to be totally reliable on big-game fish that weigh over 150 kilograms. Available in 5/16 inch for most fibreglass shafts and 11/32 inch for aluminium shafts, they are easy to install on most bowfishing arrows. NOTE: The vast majority of fibreglass bowfishing shafts are 5/16 inch in diameter. if in doubt, order the 5/16 size and you will be 90 percent safe.
If you are going on a major bowfishing trip, or even for an afternoon wander along the bank of your favourite river, it is an excellent idea to tame some spare arrows.
If you make your own fishing arrows, this convenient three pack of AMS safety Slides will save you a bit of cash.
The easiest way to attach your line to your safety slide is with a common square knot. The problem is that when you want to remove the arrow for storage or transport, the knot is often jammed forcing you to cut the line. That line is expensive, so here is a better way.
First tie a 20cm loop in your line with a common bowline knot. Now pinch the loop into a point and run it through one eye of the slide and then the other. Pull the loop through to the knot and slip it over the point end of the arrow. Now slide it to nock end and slip the loop over that end also and pull it tight. You now have your line securely attached to the arrow. To remove, simply reverse the process leaving the loop in the line for next time.
This method of attaching your fishing line to your arrow is much faster and more secure than a knot, but it has another advantage. The doubled loop reinforces the first 20cm of line that is the most subject to wear so that when you get a complete pass through, your line has twice the breaking strength up front where you need it the most.
