The reels are the ultimate in big-game bowfishing reels. All models feature excellent line control and fast powerful retrieves. Retriever reels mount directly to the sight bushings on most compound and traditional bows and have a quick detach thumb screw that lets you remove the reel for storage and transport.
The comes in several models and we try to have all the most popular ones (including the new Pro) in stock ready for immediate delivery anywhere in New Zealand or Australia. Each reel includes all mounting hardware and comes with a AMS Safety Slide. There is a model of Retriever reel suitable for any size fish from a one kilogram mullet to a 100 kilogram blue pointer.
The Cajun bowfishing reel is a much sturdier all-metal version of the above basic bowfishing reel.
The Cajun Reel has a powder-coated spool and shaft to protect it from rust and screws directly into your stabiliser socket. This sturdy but economically priced reel is the best way there is to get started in bowfishing with quality equipment without breaking the bank to do it.
The Cajun Reel also has a substantial spring clip to secure the line on the spool while you look for fish.
The Cajun Tape-On Bowfishing Reel is the same basic reel as the one above, but instead of the stud that mounts to the stabiliser bushing, you install this one below the bow handle with electrical tape (not included).
The Cajun Tape-On Bowfishing Reel is for use on longbows and older recurves that don't have stabiliser bushings.
When top tournament bowfishing participants want a reliable fast-acting reel they can count on they invariably turn to the Zebco 808. The heavy-duty construction and corrosion-resistant components will make for years of reliable service in the harshest of conditions.
The Zebco is the perfect choice for bowfishing in New Zealand and Australia for medium-sized fish up to big kingies and medium rays, and when you aren't bowfishing, move it to your spin casting rod and try a few casts with one of the smoothest fishing reels on the market.
Comes loaded with 100 yards of 20 pound line but we will include 25 yards of 80 pound line.
Here is your basic plastic and steel wrap-around bowfishing reel from Martin Archery, It is an excellent choice if you are just starting out and plan to go after smaller species of fresh-water fish.
The plastic spool attaches to the bow with a steel shaft that screws directly into your stabiliser socket. The Basic Bowfishing Reel comes complete with 50 yards of 80-pound bowfishing line.
This reel would not a great choice for salt water bowfishing as the steel shaft that holds the reel to the bow will quickly rust.
Many of our bowfishing customers have asked if there was a practical way that they can use a standard fishing rod to land a fish after it has been shot with a fishing arrow. One way is to simply load your standard reel (or better yet, mount the Zebco 808, listed above, on your fishing rod) with heavy line (50kg test or more, depending on what sort of fish you are after) and tie it to the safety slide on your fishing arrow.
The problem is that the heavy bowfishing line doesn't feed well through the rod guides and this can limit your range. Get around this by mounting a Cajun Bowfishing Reel (or use the Basic Reel if you are on a budget) on your bow in the normal manner. Now take 15 or 20 turns of line around this reel so that when you shoot, the initial ten meters of line spools off the bowfishing reel. Once the fish is struck and has stripped all the line off your bowfishing reel, you can put your bow down and pick up your fishing rod. The same thing will work with an AMS Big Game Retriever Reel, of course, but the crank on the Retriever becomes redundant.
This simple trick works especially well with large fish, stingrays and sharks that often put up a long fight before they can be safely landed.
