The New Zealand Deer Hunter's Handbook
by Alex M. Gale

The New Zealand Deer Hunter's Handbook covers hunting in New Zealand from field to table. You will find extensive information on how to hunt safely, effectively and successfully; how to get your venison out of the field and into the cooker; and how enjoy the fruits of the hunt. The New Zealand Deer Hunter's Handbook is an invaluable resource guide to everything that is part and parcel of hunting in New Zealand from ballistics to venison cooking. You will also find links to over one hundred websites that will provide more information than could be contained in any single book.

Fair Chase
by Andy Lyver

If you are a bloke looking for a way to encourage your partner to accompany you on your bowhunting jaunts then you should do two things. First read this book by Andy Lyver. You will find it to be a fascinating story, well written and entertaining for anyone interested in hunting. You will quickly get over the fact that Andy isn't a bowhunter (You may even forgive her for it) enjoy the story of a young woman's journey from being a non-hunter to becoming as keen as her new mate.

The Second thing to do? Give it to your partner to read--she (or he) will love you for it.

When Andy married into a prominent hunting family in the Hawke’s Bay she had a choice–beat’em or join’em. It wasn't a hard decision. She'd grown up enjoying the outdoors and the freedom that life in the country offered a girl, but hunting has been something men did. With the guidance of Maco, her unflappable mate, she discovered a whole new world that satisfied her appetite for adventure, scrapes and challenges.

As a former editor of the New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association magazine New Zealand Hunting & Wildlife, freelance writer, pilot and a seasonal cook for a hunting lodge, Andy brings a whole new perspective to the hunting experience.

Blaze Orange and Bowhunting

The number of bowhunters that wear blaze orange in New Zealand and Australia is miniscule but a patch of blaze orange on your back or on your cap is the best way to assure your safety while hunting in bush you might unknowingly be sharing with gun hunters.

Most of the photos you see in popular US bowhunting magazines, such as Bowhunter and Bow and Arrow, do not show bowhunters wearing blaze orange clothing. This is because in the USA and Canada, bowhunters and gun hunters have separate seasons that essentially keep them separated. When hunting during the gun season on most states in the USA and Canada, bowhunters are required to wear blaze orange the same as gun hunters. Because there are no closed seasons in New Zealand and parts of Australia, a small bit of blaze orange is the cheapest insurance you can buy, so think about it.
