Most most of us today do not shoot wood arrows, and carbon fibre has taken the lead from aluminium as the material of choice for the majority of shooters. However, for a significant and rapidly growing number of us wood continues to be the favourite material. There are several advantages to wood shafts. Traditional archers like them because they are traditional. Others like them because they are fairly easy to make at home allowing you to get just the exact arrow you need, and re-enactors like them because they are required by the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) and other such groups. And a great many of us shoot wood shafts because . . . . well, it's really hard to explain, but there is something about a wood arrow shot from a traditional bow that feels right in a way that no other material can match. Most archery enthusiasts who prefer to shoot wood arrows make their own up out of materials we sell on our Components Page. However, for those without the time or inclination to make their own, NZAP has a selection of wood arrows available to fit nearly every need.

Wood Arrows in Compound BowsContrary to what you have heard and what is stated in nearly every compound bow owner's manual, (a reaction to the strict product-liability laws in the USA) it is perfectly OK to shoot wood arrows out of your compound bow. Just increase the minimum spine weight by one weight group, reject any shafts that have any cross grain, and discard any arrows that become even slightly damaged, and you won't have any problem. |
The NZAP retail store is open weekdays noon to 5 except on public holidays. Saturdays by appointment only.
