The NZFAA animal round is much like the popular 3-D round except the targets are pictures of different animals printed on sheets of paper attached to stiff cardboard backing then attached to standard archery target butts. Twenty targets are used in two sets of ten each. Distances can be marked in the Animal Round or they may be unmarked so that distances are not know to the shooters. Each animal target is marked in two zones: an inner high-score zone, which designates the "kill" zone; and an outer low-score zone, which is effectively the rest of the animal not counting hair or feathers. (Most animal targets printed today have a bonus X-ring in the center of the high-score zone. This can be used for extra points, as a tie breaker, or it can be ignored.)
Each shooter is allowed up to three arrows and will shoot at each target until a scoring hit is achieved. Only one scoring arrow is allowed for each target, so when a shooter scores with the first arrow, no more arrows are shot at that target. Scoring is on a decreasing scale that depends on the number of arrows shot at each target. A high-score hit with the first arrow scores a 20, a high-score second arrow scores 16, and a high score third arrow scores 12. If a shooter's first arrow hits the low-score zone of a target the score is 18, the second arrow scores 14 and the third arrow scores 10.
