Glue-On Nocks for Traditional Arrows

Bohning Classic Arrow Nocks
Traditional Arrow Nocks

At NZAP we try to keep the most popular brands of traditional glue-on arrow nocks in stock and ready to ship. There aren't as many of these as there were only a few years ago as most non-traditional archery enthusiasts turn towards more modern arrow-shaft materials such as carbon and aluminium with internal-fitting nocks. That's ok though as more and more traditional shooters are rediscovering the challenge of making their own arrows from wood shafts.

Our most popular glue-on nock with traditional arrow builders is the Bohning Classic with its characteristic raised indicator ridge that allows you to nock an arrow by feel without looking at it to determine the position of your cock fletch. This is a great advantage to traditional bowhunters but there are plenty of field and target archers who prefer the Classic Nock as well. For those that don't like the raised indicator ridge, we have the Bohning T nock, which is the same as the Classic without the indicator. Then of course, we have the Z Nock from AAE Archery. This is also a very popular nock with many fans that won't shoot anything else.

Bohning Classic Nocks

The Bohning Classic Nock is by for the most popular glue-on nock we sell. This unique design provides a perfect fit to the string with a snap-on feature that keeps your arrow secure. The raised indicator allows nocking without looking to see if your cock fletch is positioned correctly so you don't have to take your eyes off your target. Classic Nocks are available in six colors and three sizes

The T Nock is very popular with target archers shooting the Easton Jazz and Easton Blues aluminium arrows. Bohning T Nocks are available in the same six colors and three sizes as the Classic Nocks.

AAE Archery Z Nocks

The Z-Nock from Arizona Archery uses a double-snap snap-on design for a secure fit on your bowstring that insures a flawless release with a minimum of string drag. The rounded throat is designed to provide a continuous radius for your bowstring even on very short compound bows. This keeps the arrow on the bowstring at any string angle. Z Nocks also have a very thin base for an even transition from the nock to the arrow shaft. Most of our customers also agree that Z Nocks are tougher than other brands. They are formulated from a plastic that requires you install them with a cyanoacetate glue (super glue) such as AAE Fastset Gel. Other adhesives will not work well and can distort the nock.

AAE Z Nocks are available in the eight colours and three sizes.

How to Fit Nocks to Your String

Just how tight should your nock fit on your bowstring? The answer depends on a lot of things but the most important thing to keep in mind that no matter how tight or loose your nocks are, they should be consistent so that the nocks on all your arrows are exactly the same fit. Nocks that are not consistent, as when a set of arrows has nocks from different manufacturers, for example, will simply not group together.

Beyond that, nock fit is largely a matter of personal preference. Keep in mind that nocks that are too tight will quickly wear away your serving, so in this sense, nocks are somewhat self adjusting. The problem is that as the serving wears your arrows will fly slightly different. Nocks that are too loose will be difficult to keep on the string, so getting the tension just right is important. The old rule of thumb with traditional bows was that a nock should be just tight enough to hold the arrow on the string when it was allowed to dangle but never so tight as to allow the bow to be lifted from the ground by the arrow nock, and that is still a good place to start.

If your nocks are too tight of too loose on your string try this little trick. Immerse the ears of the nock in boiling water for about three seconds, just enough to soften the plastic slightly. Now slip the hot nock onto the string and let it cool in place. Try the nock and if the fit is correct, do the rest of your arrows exactly the same way.
